چکیده

High availability and diversity make Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) an interesting source of information for an increasing number of use cases. Varying quality, however, is a concern often raised when it comes to using VGI in professional applications. Recent research directs towards the estimation of VGI quality through the notion of trust as a proxy measure. In this chapter, we investigate which indicators influence trust, focusing on inherent properties that do not require any comparison with a ground truth dataset. The indicators are tested on a sample dataset extracted from OpenStreetMap. High numbers of contributors, versions and confirmations are considered as positive indicators, while corrections and revisions are treated as indicators that have a negative influence on the development of feature trustworthiness. In order to evaluate the trust measure, its results have been compared to the results of a quality measure obtained from a field survey. The quality measure is based on thematic accuracy, topological consistency, and information completeness. To address information completeness as a criterion of data quality, the importance of individual tags for a given feature type was determined based on a method adopted from information retrieval. The results of the comparison between trust assessments and quality measure show significant support for the hypothesis that featurelevel VGI data quality can be assessed using a trust model based on data provenance. Provenance and Trust in Volunteered Geographic Information: The Case of OpenStreetMap

We propose to use the trustworthiness of features in OpenStreetMap as a proxy function for data quality, where a feature’s trust value is computed solely from its history. The trustworthiness is based on the different contribution patterns that can be found in a feature’s history, such as rollbacks or deletions. We argue that these patterns influence the trustworthiness of a feature and its con...

Tracking Editing Processes in Volunteered Geographic Information: The Case of OpenStreetMap

With an increasing number of applications building on OpenStreetMap, data quality is becoming a pressing issue. Data provenance gives useful hints that facilitate data quality assessments based on the features’ persistence. However, this requires a detailed analysis of the editing history and the corresponding contributors. In order to make this provenance information explicit, we introduce a p...

Can we Trust Information? - The Case of Volunteered Geographic Information

In this paper we take a fresh look at the problem of information quality for user contributed content. We assert that the traditional quality criteria for assessing the quality of geographic information are difficult to apply to Volunteered Geographic Information. The notion of informational trust is introduced and linked to the established notion of interpersonal trust. We then propose to use ...

Validation of Volunteered Geographic Information Landuse Change Using Satellite Imagery

Land use change monitoring is one of the main concerns of managers and urban planners due to human activities and unbalanced physical development in urban areas. In this paper, a combination of remote sensing data and volunteered geographic information was used to assess the quality of volunteered geographic information on land use and land cover changes monitoring. For this purpose, the ORBVIE...
